His family emigrated to Steubenville, Ohio in 1818 where he first began to paint, inspired by the majestic beauty of the Ohio River and the then-untamed American landscape. In 1825, he moved to New York City where he helped found the National Academy of Design. He settled on Cedar Grove, a farm in Catskill, New York, where he married and had five children.
